If you're looking at adding the profitable service of PDR to your existing business, the most important factor to making it a success is the quality of your education. Learning Paintless Dent Repair has been likened to learning to play a musical instrument or that of playing golf.
There are some basic fundamental metal theory principals and uses of reflection that are easy to understand, but much of it is an art form that can only be learned from an experienced instructor. I have spent over 16 years in the auto appearance industry and will share with you some of the reasons why a quality education is so important.
You Want a Quick Start - The most important aspect for learning paintless dent repair is getting proper training which will provide for a solid foundation. Avoid the shortcuts of getting training in PDR by video alone, as it's a waste of your time. A good fundamentally strong training program will get you performing quality repairs the day you leave school. Now don't get me wrong, PDR is a trade that you will systematically get better and better at, but the right education can have you fixing normal everyday door dings and small hail very quickly. This enables you to begin recouping your investment immediately. In the detail business, this can mean taking a car that may have only been a $100 invoice last week to this week being a $200 invoice because of being able to offer paintless dent removal.
Continued Improvement - While attending a structured program taught by a professional, you will also be shown the right methods for fixing larger and more difficult dents. This will enable your practice to be productive and shorten the amount of time it takes to be able to fix this type of damage. While others are searching the web for tips and experimenting to find the "secrets", you will already be on the fast track to offering tremendous savings to your customers over traditional body shop repairs.
Proven Marketing - A service is only profitable if it can be marketed and sold properly. During your education you should be shown simple but proven methods of selling PDR into a variety of markets. Your one step ahead of the game because your customer base already cares about their cars, but the right type of marketing can greatly widen your appeal.
Caution - Those are just a few reasons for the importance of a good education. Let me share some things to be cautious of when choosing from where to receive your education. These are things that I have seen in my years of business that end up costing money rather than generating money.
- DVD Series - There are many being marketed that promise great things. Have you ever seen something in person and then seen it on video? Often, the details get lost in translation. While some video series can be a good supplement to your education, they can in no way reveal the detail that is experience by taking hands-on paintless dent removal training. A live instructor can in a moment catch a bad habit from developing, or personalize your instruction to fit your background and needs.
- Cheap - Don't let price be your determining factor! Generally cheap instruction means bad instruction. Many times these are single individuals that want to supplement their income with your hard earned dollars. Also if they can't market their business to be effective, will they be able to help you market yours?
- Years of Experience - One last thing, look for experienced instructors that are truly great teachers; not just a technician who claims to be good at repairs yet can't teach step number one. In my years in the business, I have seen many who could do repair, but couldn't teach others. Remember you are learning an art form! You want someone who has taught PDR for long enough to not only be good and PDR, but also adapt at teaching it.
I hope sharing my experiences has been a help to you!
