What is PDR?
By Sean Elfsten

To the worlds populous in general, PDR is an acronym meaning Physician's Desk Reference. The Physicians' Desk Reference (PDR) is a commercially published compilation of manufacturers' prescribing information on prescription drugs, updated annually. While designed to provide physicians with the full legally mandated information relevant to writing prescriptions (just as its name suggests), it is widely available in libraries and bookstores, widely used by other medical specialists, and in significant part valuable to consumers.

PDR, when referenced in the automotive sector, is referring to the art of paintless dent repair. A technique with which one can manipulate damaged or dented metal skin of a vehicle back to an acceptable level and at times a perfect restoration is achieved. This technique has been around since the turn of the century in one form or another and exploded into the automotive sector in the late 80's.

We often refer to the trade as an art rather than procedure as the result will differ from technician to technician, rather artisan to artisan, with each repair complete the PDR technician's skill and experience broadens.

In the late 90's PDR Training facilities began popping up and with time a structured PDR curriculum was developed and implemented. In 2007 there are still differing techniques that are taught with one spin or another but the end result is that of a dent being removed by pushing it back out from the inside through the use of a long dent rod or PDR tool.

PDR training and PDR tools have evolved since I got into the business a decade ago, but one thing hasn’t; I love performing quality PDR repairs for my customers, I love talking about PDR tools and PDR training and I love the PDR business!
